German occupation lasted until the end of World War I when the British stepped in to take over. Tanzania smoothly became independent in 1961 with no tribal conflicts or linguistic divisions to slow the process. German Count Gotzen decided that famine was the most effective deterrent to rebellion and burned crops indiscriminately. At least 250,000 people died of starvation and disease. German missionaries were the first Europeans to travel into the interior of Tanganyika in the mid-1800s, and by 1884, Germany had begun colonizing the country. Over the years, the Tanganyikans increased their role in their government and finally established self-government that led to their independence from Great Britain in 1961.

Germany added to its territorial possessions in Africa with a second Anglo/German treaty of 1890 that ceded the regions of Rwanda and Burundi.
